Grandma’s Famous Apple Slab Pie
This Homemade Apple Slab Pie is a nostalgic, crowd-pleasing dessert made from scratch with a flaky crust and a sweet apple filling. It’s the perfect dessert for potlucks, holidays, or when you just want something special and easy. Kids love it—and it’s so simple, even they can help make it!
Ingredients
For the Crust:
- 2½ cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup shortening (chilled)
- ½ cup cold water
For the Apple Filling:
- 8 cups apples, peeled, cored, and thinly sliced (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp recommended)
- 1 cup white sugar
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour (for thickening)
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice (optional, for brightness)
Optional Topping:
- 1 tablespoon butter, cut into small pieces (to dot on top before baking)
- Milk or beaten egg (for brushing the crust)
- Sugar (for sprinkling)
Instructions
Step 1: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly grease a rimmed baking sheet (approximately 10×15 inches).
Step 2: In a large bowl, mix flour and salt. Cut in chilled shortening using a pastry cutter or fork until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Gradually stir in cold water until dough comes together.
Step 3: Divide dough in half. Roll out one half on a floured surface to fit the bottom and sides of the prepared baking sheet. Transfer to the sheet and press into place.
Step 4: In another bowl, toss sliced apples with sugar, cinnamon, flour, and lemon juice. Spread apple mixture evenly over the crust.
Step 5: Roll out remaining dough and place over apples. Trim and crimp edges to seal. Cut small slits in the top to allow steam to escape. Dot with butter, and brush with milk or egg wash. Sprinkle with sugar if desired.
Step 6: Bake for 40–45 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and filling is bubbling.
Step 7: Let cool slightly before slicing into bars or squares. Serve warm or at room temperature—plain or with a scoop of vanilla ice cream!
Recipe Notes:
- Want extra crunch? Add a crumble topping of brown sugar, oats, and butter before baking.
- This pie travels well—perfect for potlucks, parties, and family gatherings.
